Update: Changes have been made because original hard quote of Joel Mueller was a recollection by Brian Ball of a conversation he had with Joel. The recollection has been deleted and replaced with the actual chat transcript.
The concept of selling one thing to users in a twenty-four hour period isn't a new one—Woot has been doing it for some time. The concept of selling a different software license, more specifically a Mac software license, to users at a discounted price every twenty-four hours was when MacZot launched in March of this year. That was it was until this week. This week, Mac Update has come up with their own version of MacZot called MacUpdate Promo which does pretty much exactly what MacZot does.
I figured there would be some animosity towards MacUpdate on the part of MacZot so I got in touch with the founder of MacZot for a quick chat. Surprisingly enough, Brian Ball, the owner of MacZot, holds no such ill will. When I asked if he knew this was coming he did say that he did for sometime. I asked if MacUpdate had contacted him telling him in advance that they too were going to enter into his specific field of business but it turned out it was the opposite. Shortly after starting up Brian had contacted MacUpdate to see whether the company was interested in working together in bringing deals to the Mac community, the response (begin edited content) was as followed:
Brian Ball 8:30: Seems like you're missing the boat by not having MacZOT as some sort of partner lol
Joel Mueller 8:30: seems like MacUpdate should just start it's own maczot if it where that amazing where = were
Brian Ball 8:31: yeah, that's a good idea!
Joel Mueller 8:31: not for you though
Brian Ball 8:31:
may as well since I'm staring my own macupdate!
(end of edited content) He is quick to point out that this wasn't his business model originally; he had been inspired by Woot so technically MacUpdate wasn't taking anything from him. When I asked him whether or not there is room for two of these services in the Mac community he gave no definitive answer: 'That just comes down to business model and focus.' While the business model is just about the same, MacZot seems to have the focus side of things on their side. 'It's a sales game at the end of the day,' Brian says.

I suppose in every industry, ideas are copied. The great Russian composer Igor Stravinsky once said 'Good composers write, great composers steal' and to some degree he is probably correct, although that doesn't make it any easier to watch.
